The Catholic Diocese of Kakamega is under the jurisdiction of Rt. Rev Joseph Obanyi Sagwe. The Catholic Diocese of Kakamega was created on February 27, 1978, from the Diocese of Kisumu. The first Bishop of the Diocese was Rt. Rev. Bishop Philip Sulumeti (1978-2015). The Catholic Diocese of Kakamega falls under Kisumu Metropolitan. It covers Vihiga and Kakamega counties in the Western region of Kenya. Currently, the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega has an area of approximately 3521 square kilometres. Presently. The diocese has a total of about 950,000 Catholics. RT. Rev Joseph Obanyi Sagwe was born on 10th March 1967 in Nyamire County – Kisii Catholic Diocese. He was ordained priest on 25th October 1996. He was consecrated and installed as the second Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega on 7th March 2015.
